Legal Question in Criminal Law in Pennsylvania
My neighbor came into my house the door was unlocked, but he waited for me to leave to come in, he is 21 years old, and has a record. He came into my house and stole my laptop and went into my bedroom to take the charger. I filed a police report at the time I didnt know that he had stole it, his father found it in his garage. I feel bad for his father he is a good person. Do I have to tell the police that I found the laptop? If so, if I tell them the neighbor stole it, and I dont want to press charges, do the cops have to anyway ? is it the law that even if i dont want to press charges, the state will do it anyway? Thank you for your time and help!!

This person may need help...and if they did that, they probably have done similar acts before or will in the future....
If you file a report the police will act on it....tThe father probably is a nice person, but the apple in this case fell a distance from the tree....
You might want to discuss it with a lawyer or your local police department --but I certainly would leave your doors locked, your alarm on in the meantime....
