pressing assult charges

can someone press assult charges ''after the fact''. an incident took place, police were called and were ''on scene'' one party was made to leave the house. everyone else stayed and police left. can the party that was made to leave later press assult charges on another party from the incident after the police leave? or would this have had to been done at time of incident with the responding officers?
