Legal Question in Criminal Law in Pennsylvania

receiving stolen goods

I work for a company that deals with gambling, we have a small game of chance license to make it legal. I purchased gambling tickets from a saleman and paid him cash, the saleman never gave the cash to the owner of the company he kept it, the owner of the company came to my place of employment and said he was going to have me arrested for receiving stolen goods, I did not know they were stolen, can he legally do that, I don't want the company or myself to get into any trouble. Every ticket that I bought I recorded in our log sheet so I do have records to prove I bought them I just don't have receipts that I paid him for them. I did pay him for every ticket that I had,if I thought they were stolen why would I record them. The saleman doesn't have anything that they could sue him for to try and recover their money, that's why I think they are trying to push the blame onto our company. I will awaite for your response.

Thank you

Re: receiving stolen goods

Without knowing your prior relationship to this salesman, i.e. past business type dealings, in order for you to be guilty of receiving stolen property, it must be shown that you knew at the time that you purchased the goods that they were stolen. Often times this can be proven by circumstancial evidence, i.e. the price you paid for the goods, was soooo cheap that you should have known they were stolen, or other conduct indicating that you knew the items were stolen.

The fact that you logged the items and recorded the sales if indicative of innocence. Thus, without more than you have indicated in your question, I can't see your company/you getting into trouble. Did you pay the going rate for the goods? Had you purchased from this salesman in the past?Did you always receive a receipt? How long after the items were"stolen" did you have them? I think there must be more before you can be liable for the theft of these goods.
