The STATUTE of limitations is the time that the police have to file charges after the crime (or discovery of the crime). In most cases, the statute of limitations is two years after the crime. There are specific crimes for which the time is longer, and there is no statute of limitations for murder and some other crimes, meaning that these may be filed at any time.
