Legal Question in Criminal Law in Pennsylvania
Hello. Today I received a phone call from a police officer who informed me that the police department and the store I stole from know what I did. He told me they had video evidence of what I did and that if I returned any unused products it will be subtracted from what I owe the store in restitution, which is something I'm not entirely sure is true. I was also advised to write down any items I stole that I have used, which is around $150 worth of items, what I returned was around $350 worth of items.
I am aware this is a misdemeanor of the first offense, and am quite worried of the consequences, as I am 20 years old and have a disorderly conduct charge and an underage/public intoxication charge. I plan on pleading not guilty to see if I can get any sort of deal, but my prior charges are making me quite wary of that. Should I rely on a public defender or hire a lawyer? I am quite worried about jail/prison time, as I saw that the crime I committed is punishable for up to 5 years.
Thanks.
