Legal Question in Elder Law in Pennsylvania

Power of attorney

My grandfather lives with me, we bought his house 20 years ago and take care of him. He is almost 93. Almost 6 months ago I found Certificate of Deposits issued in 1976 and 1980. The value on the face of these certificates total $27,000.00. He completely forgot he had them and now wants to cash them in and give gifts to his kids and grand kids before he dies (and yes I do stand to benefit from his generosity as well as my son). The prolem is he is very feeble and has extreme difficulty getting out of bed. He is currently recovering from a broken hip. He wants me to cash the CD's but I know I can't and only he can. Can I get power of attorney for this and if so how do I go about getting one? I have software that prints out the power of attorney form. Do I just have him sign it, does it have to be notarized can I have grandpa sign it without being in front of the notary or do I try to find a notary who will come to the house? I'm not comfortable getting power of attorney. Thanks for your help. I really don't have the money to involve an attorney but he is driving me CRAZY!!!!!! Will I beable to get a check from the bank and put it in my checking acct because he doesn't have one and cash is too dangerous - I'm liable to loose it!

Re: Power of attorney

Yes you need a power of attorney to cash the CD's. The form can be obtained off of the internet, but certain banks only accpet specific forms, it needs to clearly define what you can do for your grandfather.

Yes it needs notarized and yes your grandfather needs to be present. See if you can find a notary who will travel
