Legal Question in Family Law in Pennsylvania

Use of birth name after adoption

Is it legal to use a birth name instead of an adopted name on such documents as a soc. sec. card or driver's license WITHOUT going through the courts? My son is 46 and wishes to go back to his birth name.

It used to be that you could use whatever name you liked as long as you weren't avoiding debts or criminal charges.

Now if you want to change your name you have to go through the courts. Neither DMV or Social Security will let you change documents without the name change order.

Its not hard to do but its not something to attempt without a lawyer. The paperwork isn't that hard its getting the required advertising done that can be difficult.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me. The initial consultation is free.
