Legal Question in Family Law in Pennsylvania

Name Change and Adoption

Who do you contact to find out if a child's name was changed legally? Also, can a new spouse adopt a child without the biological father's consent and how can you find out if that was done? If the child was adopted, would the biological father still have to pay child support and if not would the child support stop automatically or would the father have to petition the courts.

If the change was done through the courts there would be a record of it in the Prothonotary's office in the county where it was changed.

No, for there to be an adoption by the step parent you would have be asked to sign a document to terminate your parental rights. If you didn't then they would of had to have a hearing to have your parental rights terminated. In either case you should have been given notice of the adoption hearing.

Once the adoption decree is signed child support stops. As the child is no longer related to you.

The adoptive parents should notify the DRO that the child has been adopted and they are no longer legally entitled to support.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
