RE: Name Change (State, PA.)

I want to change my married name to include my maidien hyphenated to current. I also need to drop middle name. Ques: Does the kit/price/form complete the process on its own? Any other fees? And how how does it take? I am very ill & it is important to me.

Re: RE: Name Change (State, PA.)

I do not understand what you are referring to when you mention the kit/price/form. Normally, a petition to change name is submitted to the court with a finger print card. The filing fee will depend upon your county. The court will then list the matter for a hearing. This Order for Hearing must be published in 2 newspapers. The cost of this depends on your county and which papers the Order needs to be adveritsed in. Then there will be a hearing where anyone could come to argue against the name change. Normally, no one shows up. Usually the court will issue the order that day but you may want to get certified copies of the order to send to the DMV and Social Security to actually change the name. The fee for this also varies by county.

To complete a name change in PA you must:

1) Advertise in 1 general circulation newspaper and one legal newspaper in your county.

2) Be fingerprinted and the prothonotary will forward them to the state police.

3) Run a name search at the prothonotary the day of the hearing.

All 3 things cost money. Exactly how much depends on the local costs which I could not even guess.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me. The initial consultation is free.
