Can my girlfriends mother try and take custody of her daughter even though shes a great mom?

For your girlfriend's mom to petition the court for custody she would need to have standing. That is the right to file for custody. To get this she would have to show that she took on parental responsibilities for some period of time.

If her mother could establish that then her mother would have to show that it would be in the best interest of the child for her mother to have custody as opposed to either of the child's parents. Not an easy thing to do.
