Legal Question in Family Law in Pennsylvania

Child support case closed because father was sentenced to 4 years in prison and I was told the Federal Government closed my case bc of this. Prior to his arrest he owed about $12,000 in back support. I want to reopen this case. Is this something I can do?

The federal government should not have done anything to your child support case because child support is a *state* matter. You need to contact your local Domestic Relations section of your county's Court of Common Pleas and speak to them about your situation.

In Pennsylvania, child support does not stop just because the obligor is incarcerated -- the arrears will keep piling up even if he's not (and can't) pay. Realistically, the odds are that it will never be fully paid off when he gets out, but what if he hits the lottery? For this very reason (though unlikely!), Pennsylvania courts keep the support case open while he's in jail and the obligation keeps accruing on the books.

Best of luck to you.
