my ex husband filed a small claim against me for money that he thinks is still owed and now he threatened to sherriff sale my house....can he do that if I am a single parent and have a child can they come in here and sell her belongings?

You first need to determine if there was ever an agreement for repayment. If so, how long ago was the agreement entered into. If this is an alleged debt arising out of the dissolution of marriage and he isn't happy with the way equitable distribution occurred, then more likely than not, he has litte recourse.
