companion rights

does a person who lives with a companion as husband and wife for 30 yrs. have any rights to assets accumulated during that period even though the companion has never obtained a divorce from a prior marriage

I don't see how one can claim to be husband and wife if one party was married to someone else. As the claim would have to be based on a "Common Law Marriage". Such marriages would have to conform to the laws of a marriage done under statute. Because you could not be married that way you could not have a common law marriage either.
