Debt

After marriage, will all of my credit card debt (which is in my name only) also become my husband's responsibility, or can I retain sole responsibility for the debt I have incurred.

Re: Debt

If you add him to your accounts as an additional responsible party he will generally become liable for any debts incurred after the marriage. Whether he is liable for debts incurred prior is a matter of contention.

Be fair. Make him an authorized user if you must but not an additional responsible party until you have your debt under control.

I heartily recommend that you read two books: The Millionaire Next Door and The Millionaire Mind. Both available at your local library. You don't need to read them cover to cover. But look through them and pick and choose the discussions you find interesting. They are eye opening about our relationships with money.

Please keep me in mind for your future legal needs.
