Father wanting to sign away aprental rights
Hi. My son is going to be 9 years old next week and his father, by his own choice, has refused to see him. I have had a court order for child support through Somerset County for quite some time and his father is actually scheduled for a contempt hearing next week because he hasn't paid in quite some time. I received a call from my Domestics case worker just today, saying that the father called in and was going to make a payment on Friday, but also that he wanted Domestics to send the message to me that he wants to relinquish his parental rights. After all this time, this topic has never came up until now that he is so far back on his support, that I think he wants to sign them away thinking he won't be responsible for the back support and any future support. I was researching some other websites, but I could not find the laws of PA if a parent can just sign away there rights so easily. Can someone help???

Re: Father wanting to sign away aprental rights
He can't because that would also terminate his duty to support. The state doesn't want to make any more orphans so the only way the parental rights can be terminated are if the child will be adopted or if the state feels that one or more parents are unfit. Because he hasn't been around whether dad is a fit parent isn't an issue.
