Legal Question in Family Law in Pennsylvania
My girlfriend was told by her attorney to not allow me to move in because he will have to prove that I am not a convicted felon or have any criminal background. She is in a custody battle with her ex-husband. It seems to me that the lawyer does not want to do the extra work to bring up my background. Is this a fair statement for a lawyer to make to his client?

It is not up to you to interfere with the legal advice given to your girlfriend by her attorney. It is good advice. If there is an ongoing custody battle the father of the children is going to make an issue of your criminal background and the children being exposed to someone like you. Do you really want to jeopardize her case and have the judge award custody of the children to the father?
Its not a matter of the lawyer having to do more work. It looks bad for the children to be around someone with a felony. This is an issue that does not need to be in the case. Wait till the case is resolved first.
