Legal Question in Family Law in Pennsylvania

Is my lawyer taking advantage of me?

This is in Westmoreland county. I had obtained a lawyer in August 2006 for a custody battle; I paid them all of their moneys, and retainer. When I had signed the agreement with my lawyer, I was under the impression that he is my lawyer, also because he was the one at the hearings and meetings with me. I have tried to get a hold of him for 7 months. I finally get in touch with him, so we can file for modification, and he tells me that my lawyer no longer worked with their firm. I am now confused, because he is the one who signed the agreement. Now he sends my to someone else within their firm, I was under the impression that he was going to do the filing of the paper work, and the total cost would be $750 for all of his time (ie: hearings, etc.). After about 3 weeks, nothing is filed. They send me a letter stating that I need to pay $750 for a retainer, plus an extra $150/hour. I have already paid a retainer for the first lawyer who singed with me in August 2006, and never wanted to go to this lawyer. Are they just trying to get more money from me? What can I/should I do if anything?

Sounds like the lawyer and his firm didn't explain the "retainer" well. Nor do they have any client focus. Both bad things but not anything that will get them disciplined.

In fee disputes, the matter goes before a fee arbitration board. You should contact the local bar association.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me. The initial consultation is free.
