Legal Question in Family Law in Pennsylvania

minor laws

My son is 17 and a half years old and in the army reserve while finishing high school. He will be going to boot camp for 9 weeks of the summer then returning to finish his senior year of high school. He currently resides with me, and his father lives near by. I am planning a move out of the area in the spring and he does not want to leave since he has so much going on. His father is up in the air what he will be doing so living with him may not be an option. I was going to allow him to stay in the family home until he goes to boot camp, but have been told it may not be legal. He will be 18 four weeks after returning from boot camp, therefore will be only living in the home alone as a minor for two months or so. I would be coming home every other weekend to make sure he had all the things he needed and he would have others checking on him regularly. Is this legal or must he live with another adult?

Re: minor laws

Why won't dad step up to the plate for 2 months? In the alternative is there a friend he could live with?

I don't who told you what the law is on minors living alone. I'd ask what law school they went to and what their bar number is.

Sounds like your son has his head on pretty straight, so if you trust him enough I don't think there is a legal bar, at least that comes to mind. Though if you have a neighbor who would keep and eye on him that would be a good idea.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me. The initial consultation is free.
