Legal Question in Family Law in Pennsylvania
My mom passed away several months ago. While going through her things I found an envelope addressed to my ex of more than 20 years. i have not opened it. Am I legally obligated to forward the envelope to my ex?

So long as the envelope has not passed through the mail system you are free to destroy it. You could even open it. But you probably shouldn't.
The USPS regulations and statute prohibit the unauthorized opening of mail by anyone before it gets to its destination. But if has not entered the mail stream, usually meaning been placed in a mail receptacle for mailing or placed with a person responsible for mailing, then it does not yet fall under the blanket prohibition against delaying or intercepting the mail.

If you destroy it, its going to drive you nuts wondering what was in it. However, if you open it, you might be opening the door to lots of heartache for everyone. You really do not know what is in it or the date of the contents.
I agree with Attorney Traversa - better to let sleeping dogs lie on this one and just destroy it. But you have to listen to your heart on this and do whatever you think is best regardless of the consequences.
