Legal Question in Family Law in Pennsylvania

My nephew lives in VA. He is unmarried and is the father of a 7 1/2 year old son. He and boy's mother have shared legal and physical custody of the boy. My nephew is a juvenile diabetic.

Two questions: What happens to the son if his dad dies while he is under 18?

I just wonder if my nephews family will continue to have any legal relationship with the boy.

That's going to be up to mom and your nephew's family. They have to agree the nephew's family will stay in the child's life.
