Passport

Am I obligated to give my 18 year old his passport so that he can leave the country with his girlfriend and her parents?

Re: Passport

You asked if you must give your 18 year old son his passport.

Yes. Passports actually are the property of the issuing government. No other person but the holder (the named person) may hold a passport for any purpose without legal privilege. Simply put, you are probably breaking the law if you withhold the passport. Only a judge or other authorized public officer (consular officer, border agent, etc.) may seize a passport.

Moreover, your son only needs to go about getting a replacement. That can be done in two hours in emergencies.

Regards,

Roger
