Legal Question in Family Law in Pennsylvania

My son has been granted 50 percent physical custody and primary legal custody of his infant daughter. He was never married to and never shared a home with the baby's mother. They are only 20 years old. She quit her job right before the birth of the baby and filed for child support right after the baby was born. Will he have to pay her child support?

It is unethical for me to discuss your son's child support situation with you. Every parent has a duty to support his or her child and your son is no exception. He should go to a family law attorney to more specifically discuss his situation.

However, child support in PA is determined in accordance with the support guidelines. They are available online free of charge at: http://www.pacode.com/secure/data/231/chapter1910/chap1910toc.html

Your son should concentrate on Rules 1910.16 - 1910.17. There are also several online calculators - here is one from the PA department of human services:

https://www.humanservices.state.pa.us/csws/CSWS_controller.aspx?SelectionIdBottom=7&PageId=CSWS/support_estimator_overview.ascx. This should help your son determine approximately what he can be expected to pay.
