My wife and I are getting divorced. Am I responsible for paying half a credit card bill that is in her name only?

Regarding credit card law, the answsr is no. Under divorce law, the answer is "it depends." It depends on what other marital debts and assets that you have. It will depend on whether this credit card was used for marital debt (like for a washer and dryer for the house) or whether it was solely useed to benefit your wife (like buy her a new wardrobe). It is possible that the court could order you to pay this particular debt, but I would need other information to say for sure. My advice would be to get to a family law attorney and have him or her more throughly review your assets, draw up a marital settlement agreement that is fair and file for divorce.

A word of advice. Divorce itself is not that expensive. What people fight over is the division of their properry, custody and support of children, if any, and possibly alimony. Every dollar you spend on attorneys fighting over this is one less dollar for marital debts, child support and alimony. If you and your wife can sit down and divide up your family debts and assets and make provision for your children and cooperate, things will be much better for you and your children.
