Legal Question in Family Law in Pennsylvania

I was wondering is it true that someone can disown their daughter or son and making it legal to do so? I had a friend who told me that her mother was in court and said to the judge that she disowned her daughter I never heard of this is this true?

In Pennsylvania, a parent can indeed seek to terminate his/her parental rights in a court of law. Usually, however, a parent doesn't seek to do this him/herself; another person or agency seeks it due to child neglect, abuse, etc. Technically, it's not called "disowning;" it's called "termination of parental rights."

I have, however, heard of some parents voluntarily agreeing to terminate their parental rights to a child they have no contact with -- especially if they're paying child support! When parental rights are formally terminated, so are child support obligations. Hope this answers your question.
