car repair job gone bad

i had my transmission repaird by a ford mechanic on his own time for $2000 and it doesnt work. I paid him by check. I would like to sue him for the needed repairs at a certified repair shop..can i?

Yes, you can sue him in "small claims court". You should go to your local District Justice OOffice and request a Civil Complaint form. You should then fill out the form, pay the filing fee, and a hearing will be scheduled. It would be helpful if you obtained a short letter or report from the certified repair shop explaining exactly what the first mechanic did wrong.
