Ask about a friend giving you money?

A fiend gave me money for to help me after my mother died. Well now they said they want it back the total amount? Can they make me give it back? There was nothing

signed and no agreement.

By "giving" you money, I guess you believed that it was a gift? A person cannot require that a gift be returned.

Without an agreement of some kind, written or verbal, it comes down to you saying it was a gift and them saying it was a loan.

So, I guess it depends on how much you value the friendship.
