lawyer and client being sued by named defendent

My lawyer and I have been named jointly in a suit filed by a defendant in a suit we filed against him. Can my lawyer or one of his associates defend me seeing he is a named defendent? Can his lawyers defend me?

I surmise the complaint asserts joint and several liability. Moreover, your potential defenses may assert that if liability is proven by the plaintiff that the liability rests with the co-defendant. Accordingly, this creates a conflict that prohibits your former attorney (or his attorney) from representing you. You should obtain you own attorney and seek advice.
