Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Pennsylvania

personal property

What is our legal resposibility to keep someones personal property in our basement if they refuse to get it out? Can we be held liable if we send it to goodwill? The person never lived at our house. We stored her stuff for her while she was in jail. She has been out since Feb. and has made no effort to get her stuff.

Re: personal property

You have no obligation if you have given them notice. Make sure you send the person a LETTER, keep a copy, and tell them that you need the space and you will sell the items to goodwill. If she sues, which I doubt she will, then you will need to wave as many letters as possible in court that indicate that you made all reasonable efforts to contact this person. Please also note in the letter that you were NEVER paid anything for the storage. The letter is the safest thing to do, so make it look good.
