Purchase problem

I bought a atv from a friend, I owe $500 yet, but they wont produce a title. THye make excuses what should I know about my rights. they owe money on this bike and I was told THey have the title, but its not the case. any help?

If they couldn't produce the title why did you buy it? They have no proof that they even own what they are selling. You also have no proof that they didn't have any liens on the ATV. Further, you have no proof that you own the ATV.

I don't suppose there was a written contract?
