Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Pennsylvania
renter possessions
My girlfriend and I split. She moved out w/out her stuff, except clothes. I signed the new lease by myself. I packed up her stuff and told her to get it. She didn't. I told her I was going to move it to the basement storage area, that she still has a key to, she said that was ok. It's been almost 2 weeks and she still hasn't gotten her stuff. Now she's saying if there is any damage to her stuff, ( water etc...) I'll have to pay. I had given her several opportunities to come get it before I moved it. Can she hold me responsible for her stuff in the basement?

Re: renter possessions
You asked about ridding yourself of an exe's excess.
Legally she probably can't hold you responsible, but that won't stop her from holding you responsible.
You did well by packing her stuff up and taking any care with it. Send her a letter with a date certain by which she must pick up her belongings, return receipt requested. If she doesn't pick it up, donate to your local women's shelter.

Roger

I don't think you are legally responsible under the circumstances that you describe, but if there is any dispute you would be wise to resolve it without going to court. Sometimes people will use disputes about personal items to hang onto a relationship and it can get ugly.
