Sued for disrespecting employee
I am a super for a non-profit recreational facility. A young girl, who does not work under me, overheard me say to another employee ''I wish those people would get off their asses and help us'' She thought I was refering to her and claimed that I disrespected her. She called her father who in turn called their attorney (a family friend) and are threatening to sue me. I believe the race card will be pulled because she is black and I am white. I was not refering to her at all and I was not even in the same room as her when I said it. I am assuming that their attorney is considering taking the case because they notified my boss after speaking to him. I am wondering if I can be sued for using a foul word in her presence being that she is a minor (17). Immediatly after this incident, the girl came up to me and said to my face while I was on the phone to put the phone down so she could call her supervisor and report me for disrespecting her. She said this to me in front of several other people and as a supervisor myself, I feel that she was disrespectful to me. I also now feel that my authority has been challenged and my employer is obviously not going to help me out.

In today's workplace, you can never be careful about what you say. I suggest that you see a lawyer so that your rights remain protected. While this might cost you some money, you coule potentially lose your job over someone else's accusations. Happens all the time.
