Travel outside of USA (OPT)

Hi,

I received my degree and just begin my opt this Jan. Currently I am working on papers with my advisor but without a job offered. I need to travel outside of USA this May but I am really confused if I can do so.

An university international student advisor told me that I need to have a job offer otherwise I cannot travel outside of USA.

The May event is very critical and I must attend. Can I ask my advisor to provide a letter so that I still can travel outside of USA?

You asked about traveling outside of the U.S. where you are not a resident alien or have a proper VISA.

This is a highly particular area of the law and you must speak with an immigration attorney on this matter. Any error on your part could not only find that you are refused entry on your return but could also result in a period of exclusion.

You suggested having a professor write a letter. The actual scheme proposed does not sound as though that letter would be an accurate representation of the circumstances. Not only would such a letter be unhelpful but you would be putting the professor in the position of potentially committing a fraud.

You have plenty of time and should be able to find a VISA or VISA waiver that will accommodate your situation.
