truancy

My son has been late to school 34 times this year. We now have to appear in court. Why is he considered truant when he was only late to homeroom?

I think the problem is evident in your question. If, after 34 latenesses, instead of taking responsibility, you are questioning the substance of the school's curriculum, then you may not ever understand why you are now being summoned to court. But, I assure you that the Court will not buy the Homeroom Defense. If you show up questioning the validity of homeroom, your son may suffer serious permanent consequences.
