Legal Question in Employment Law in Pennsylvania

Compensated for required schooling

I work for the mantaince department for my company. They are forcing some of my co-workers and i to take certain college classes. Are they required to pay us for the time we spend in these classes? Or can they legally force us to go to these classes on our own time?

Re: Compensated for required schooling

You asked about required classes for employment.

This is an area of contention. In some cases an employer can be required to compensate an employee for taking classes. In other cases an employee can be required to take classes in order to retain his/her employment.

I think you need to look at the reason the employer wants the employees to have certain college classes, the benefit to the employee and the benefit to the employer.

As with most questions at law, there is no one size fits all answer.

Roger
