Question about deductions after leaving a company

My fiancee recently left a company he was with for 2 years. He gave his 2 week notice verbally and wrote a letter. His last 2 pay checks were held for what his employer called ''education expenses''. The breakdown showed that the expenses he claimed were owed to him was for air fare and hotel stays. Is there anything we can do to fight to get some of the money back?
