Legal Question in Employment Law in Pennsylvania

Residency Requirement for Job

Is it legal for a government employer, in my case a county, to require that I live the county that I work for as a condition of employment? I have been told this is illegal.

I love the easy answers. Yes.

Though, a private (non-public) employer can be held to a higher standard but even they are able to require that an employee live within a certain geographic area. The question that needs to be asked is "Is the urpose of the rule discriminatory?" If the answer is no then most workplace rules are allowed.
