Legal Question in Employment Law in Pennsylvania
At will employee
we are given a mandatory document to sign that states we are an at will employee and that we understand the employee handbook, but most important we are told to sign that we understand that we can be terminated with out notice or cause. we feel this will mean we agree to any termination for any reason even if it is wrongful termination, and eliminate any possibility for unemployment compensation rights. do we have to sign this form, or can we write that we have read the employee handbook but do not agree with the part of the (we understand that we can be terminated without notice or cause).

Re: At will employee
You may as well sign it because it merely states the
law as it is in Pennsylvania. Almost every employee
is an employee at will and can be fired for any or
no reason under the prevailing common law. Certain
statutes (Federal and State anti-discrimination
laws) prevent a firing motivated by an improper motive
like race or sex. Elegibility for unemployment is
controlled by other law and can not be altered by
anything the employer makes you sign. Only if you
are discharged for "wilful misconduct" will you be
disqualified for compensation. (or you quit)
