Can a person get fired from their job for doing something they never did, and the employer never have proof of the offense?

Yes they can.
UNLESS, they were discriminated against based upon race, religion, gender, etc.

Most jobs are "at will" meaning you can be fired at any time for any reason other than a protected reason like age, race, or gender discrimination. The exception are those few of us that have negotiated employment contracts that provide further protection or are covered by union contracts.
People like to disparage the union movement, until something like this happens and they are left without recourse.
