Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Pennsylvania

After about 40 years of accepting payment of rent and utilities by check, my landlord suddenly says that their office will no longer accept payment by check. Rather the tenants have three options, according to the landlord, including giving the landlord the right to withdraw the money from tenant accounts when they want to, some kind of telephone payment and some kind of Internet payment. This does not sound legal to me. Is it? My lease still refers to payment by check. Wouldn't the landlord at least have to change the terms of the lease (renewable in September 2012) before changing payment requirements?.
