my apartment was broken into (the bars were pried open) Am I covered under the landlords homeowners insurance?

No. Nor can you sue the landlord for your loss. You should have renters insurance. Many landlords require you to have it. Its cheap often if you buy it from the folks who insure your car you can get discounts on both policies.
