Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Pennsylvania

apartment fire

My daughter's apartment building in

State College, PA caught on fire as a

result of a faulty air conditioning unit

in another apartment. She suffered

smoke damage to many of her

belongings. Her friends in other

apartments lost everything due to

water damage. None of them had

renter's insurance. Since the fire

started as a result of faulty wiring, is

the landlord liable for replacing all of

the renters' belongings?

Re: apartment fire

Probably not. Most landlords now require their tenants to get renter's insurance. It's not expensive and if you do it through your auto insurance carrier (if the offer it) you get a discount that reduces the cost even further.

If there's any place that might help you out check with your homeowners insurance carrier. They might cover some of your daughter's loss.

If you have any questions feel to contact me. The initial consultation is free.
