Protected from what?
There was a law passed in 2009 called the Protecting Tenants at Foreclosure Act which states that if a landlord is foreclosed upon, the tenant can continue staying in the property for up to 90 days (where the purchaser at foreclosure seeks to use the property as a primary residence or there is a tenancy at will). Otherwise, the purchaser has to wait till the expiration of the lease. To continue to get these benefits, the tenant obviously has to keep paying rent. Once the foreclosure occurs, rent is paid to the purchaser at the foreclosure sale.
