Management company citing unmentioned zoning ordinance
At the beginning of August, myself and 3 friends(two of whom are sisters)began renting a house. We met several times with the house owners, who approved of our situation and seemed eager to let us rent the house. They informed us that they had decided to have a property management company handle everything. We signed a year's lease, having been told that only two of our names were necessary as signers of the lease and that the other two roomates could be listed as occupants.Today we received a call from the management company telling us that there exists in our local zoning code an ordinance which states that no more than two unrelated persons may occupy a house on the street in which we live. We were told that one of us would have to move out, leaving three of us to split the bills (which we would be unable to afford). While we were in the process of signing the lease, we made them fully aware (noted on application) that only two of the occupants would be related to each other, and we also specifically asked if any laws existed that would bar such a situation. We were told there would be no problems. We are college students with little money and are desperate for any info on options we may have. Thank you.
