Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Pennsylvania

signature on lease

After my roommate and I signed and

turned in our lease to our landlord

yesterday. He came back and said that

one or both of our signatures was not

legible enough. Now he is making

another copy of the lease and asking for

us to sign it again. Both of us signed

our names as we would for any other

legal document, or anything else for

that matter. I have proof that my

signature is consistent. The landlord

had an attitude about it, and

sarcastically asked us if we were

doctors. I myself am an artist and my

signature is almost a trademark unto

itself. Can he legally force me to sign

my name not as I usually would? Just for

his piece of mind? will it hold up

because it will look different than

anything else that I've ever signed?

Re: signature on lease

Your signature is your signature. He can't force you to sign a different way. Perhaps he could have you print your name next to your "illegible" signature so that he can enjoy reading it whenever he chooses.

I would caution you, however, that perhaps you don't want to rent from someone who obviously has some "issues" and eccentricities that may indicate problems ahead.

Re: signature on lease

Well what signature is on the lease only matters if there is a problem.

Seems a bit odd he wants your signatures to be legible.

If he wants no dispute on signatures he should ask you to execute the lease in front of a notary.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me the initial consultation is free.
