Vacate lease early

I signed a lease for a year but 2 weeks after moving in I accepted a job out of state and moved immediately. My old appartment complex has sent me a bill for 6 months rent because they claimed not to have rented the appartment for that period of time. Do I have any options other than paying the 6 months rent?

Prove that they rented the apartment sooner than 6 months. Talk to other tenants in the building to see how long the apartment was empty and go from there. (This is PA law. You didn't say what state the apartment was in.)
