Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Pennsylvania

Legally married.

I am invited to a wedding,in which the bride & groom are not going to use a judge, priest or minister. They are saying their own vows. In Pa. is this a legal marriage?

Re: Legally married.

I'm a little reluctant to answer because I wouldn't want my response to be used to cloud the joy and happiness which should mark any wedding ceremony. I'm assuming your question is simply curiosity and you're going to keep your reservations about the legality to yourself, becuase, frankly, there's nothing in your question that indicates it's any of your business, as an invited guest.

Pennsylvania used to be one of a minority of states which recognized common law marriage. Since 2003, that's not so.

A good summary about common law marriage is found at http://www.ct-divorce.com/Commlaw.htm.

Quaker ceremonies don't use a minister and they are undoubtedly valid. So I can't really answer your question.
