Legal Question in Mediation in Pennsylvania

Title Transfer

Car is titled in my and ex-boyfriends name. Need to remove my name, he is refusing to sign. What can I do? He paid for the vehicle and I want him to have it but he won't let me take my name off making me also liable for any incidents that may occur.

Re: Title Transfer

You asked about taking your name off of the title of a vehicle.

You miss the point, he doesn't need to sign to do that. Nor do you need to do it through motor vehicles. It is not as if you are abandoning the vehicle, you simply want to disclaim any further responsibility. What I'm going to suggest is not effective as to any liability for a loan taken out in both names.

Quit-claim the title to him. Do a little research in the library and you can find the necessary form and procedure. Generally, you will send (formally serve) him a notice quitting any claim to the vehicle. This won't remove your name from the title, he can do this on his own. But it gives him notice that you disclaim any ownership. If anyone comes after you for anything (which is unlikely) then you can use the quit-claim, and proof of service, to extricate yourself.

Regards,

Roger
