Did I commit defamation of character
A police officer that comes into the convience store where I work, wants to sue me for defamation of character. I found out that he was cheating on his fiance, with the girl who lives across the street from me. My roommates and I were joking around that we should video tape him and mail it to his fiance. Things got out of hand and he ended up finding out that I said that I was going to mail a tape of him cheating to his fiance. I did tell a few people that he was cheating on his fiance, someone that he works with overheard the conversation and told his fiance. Apparantly everyone that he works with now knows what happened. He talked to my boss about it and told my boss that he wants to sue me for defamation of character. I never said anything that was untrue. The girl that lives across from me even talked to his fiance and confirmed that he had been cheating. Can I be held responsible? What can I do?

If what you did was true, you should be fine

Truth is an absolute defense to defamation. Problem is likely to be proving it to be true.
