Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Pennsylvania
average time to settle a large estate
My grandparents have both died in the past few years- my grandfather in June of 2002 and my grandmother in August of 2003 (my grandmother getting everything when he died- even though she was in a nursing home). When my they were living I always got the impression that my brother and I (only two grandchildren) were in the will. My grandfather mentioned several times that he had a million plus (and I believe it based on what I saw and heard from others). However, it is now going on two years since she died and I haven't heard anything. My dad has mentioned in the past 6 months about going to see the attorney because one of thier CD's matured. One of two things is happening. Either it's not settled and they (my dad and the attorney) are still waiting for all the investments to come in, or my dad got it all and is not sharing it with us. I don't want to ask him and sound greedy. So, my question is, for a wealthy person can an estate drag on for several years before it si settled if there are numerous investments that may be hanging out there? Thank you.

You might not be an heir. The will must be probated and is a matter of public record. You can check with the Probate offic of the county where the will is being probated. I suggest you verify whether you were to receive a distribution. If your father is involved, he will know the current status. It may be the attorney who is delaying things. It should be investigated.
