Do I forfeit my security deposit if I break my lease?

I broke a lease, and my landlord got a new tenat immediately. There were NO Damages to mitigate. First my landlord said I needed to pay a cancellation fee for breaking the lease, which was equivalent to the remaining rent periods, I refused (I knew that wasn't legal). They withheld my security ($1070) and said I forfeited my security when I broke my lease, and are fining me approx $700 for painting and shampooing. The apartment was Sparkling clean, I took pictures (however they didn't come out too clear).

Is there any justice for me? Is is worth paying for professional help?

A landlord is entitled to reimbursement for his loss of rental in the event of breaking the lease. If he suffered no loss he is not entitled to damages. Did he advertise or spend money to make repairs. If he did these are legitimate costs. I can not answer whether it worth proceeding. Consult an attorney. If I can help please let me know.
